Reflection…

 

  • What did you find surprising or striking as you furthered your knowledge about how people learn?

As silly as it sounds but the concept, as a whole of how people learn was very fascinating but at the same time very overwhelming. There are so many different styles and theories that explain and how and why people learn a certain way and now to really be able to break it all down was interesting. I find it surprising how these learning theories have really been documented way before the civilization of technology, since technology is a grand part of this course and degree. Knowing this now and how we need to be able to understand the concepts that come from the learning theories so that can then evolve to be able to tweak and adjust them according to help people learn even better.

 

  • How has this course deepened your understanding of your personal learning process?

Being a learner now for 25 plus years you get to know yourself and how you learn best: You know what works for you and what doesn’t. You know what you lean towards in using as tool and what you try to stay away, but until this class I can honestly say that I had never looked in what “type” of learner I am. I always said I was a visual learner but after this course I can consider myself more sophisticated and say I’m a behaviorist, constructive, and cognitive learner.  I now have a reason for the way I learn and how I focus my thoughts and make connections not only visually but also mentally. It great to have the help of those in this course to really probe my thought process in how I learn. I was able to look at whom I share a class with and in a sense compare to really understand why I do the things I do. I definitely have taken much more from this class then I ever thought. Now that I have a better understanding of myself I am sure I will have a better understanding of those around me.

 

  • What have you learned regarding the connection between learning theories, learning styles, educational technology, and motivation?

           I have learned that in this type of learning industry and all it involves there is always a crossover of information and how one might compliment the other. Most of all I now have an understanding of the motivation that lies beneath the theories and styles. For me motivation has played a factor because at the core of each learner you will find what their motivation for learning is and how you can spark it through the right type of tools and instruction you are able to give him/her based on their learning style they are most responsive too. The technology that is out there for education is something growing at a rapid pace, the tools available to learners to really be able to make a connection between what they know about themselves (in learning) and what can be done to improve. Technology has made the limitation on learning pretty much endless but at the same time it becomes overwhelming so once again keeping that motivation up is for me the number one priority in learning.

 

  • How will your learning in this course help you as you further your career in the field of instructional design?

           More than anything after this course I hope to really be an inspiring instructor in this field. Whether it is a classroom, training room, or providing inspiration for those via social media such as blog have done for me. I hope I am able to now engage with the learners I encounter in another level where I can understand them and provide the guidance and direction that they will most likely be grateful for and definitely receptive too. I know now the what type of tools that are available out there for the field of instructional design. Being able to really target my learners with motivation and positive reinforcement is something that I will always strive for. I am grateful for my classmates that have guided me through this class because I have so much to learn and that too will be something that will further my career one day in the field of instructional design.

Fitting the Pieces Together

  • How has your view on how you learn changed?

At the beginning of this course I was very excited to learn about the different theories because I know that this is beneficial not only for me but for all those learners that I will encounter in my future career. I have now learned that the concept of learning is way more complex than meets the eye, no pun intended. I really now understand the sacrifice that is made on the learning and instructor to be able to have the motivation and engagement to be more effective

  • What have you learned about the various learning theories and learning styles over the past weeks that can further explain your own personal learning preferences?

I have always struggled to be engaged in learning. So being at the other end of being the one who wants to instruct it makes me fully aware that I need to get myself straightened out in regards to learning material the right way. I have now understood and learned that by understanding what helps me and what doesn’t I am able to find better end result in tools to further my knowledge in this industry. I still consider myself a visual learning and I like to be able to be in a situation that will only allow further learning. Another thing that I have learned is the terminology used with categories for each type of learner, which is something that I have put a fight against.  But learning theories and styles have really put a positive spin to it all because it will only be of benefit to you. So I can now say that I am in a different state of opinion, I am on Stage 7 of this Acceptance and Hope.

  • What role does technology play in your learning (i.e., as a way to search for information, to record information, to create, etc.)?

More than ever the Internet and technology tools are playing a role in my learning. EDUC 6115 Learning Theories and Instruction has opened my eyes to the tools that are available to everyone in the Instructional Design industry and how it is a truly knit community of learners. They aren’t only guiding those in their everyday job but always creating blogs to be able to share all the information that have come across and are very caring to share with their colleagues. Technology definitely plays a huge role in being able to go to these blogs and articles that are invested in ID.

Connectivism…. Tell me about it

 

  • How has your network changed the way you learn?

As my networks change I am presented with different views and really get that social environment that is all too important to the constructivism learning theory. I am exposed to new ways of thinking and interpretations of ideas. I appreciate the thoughts of other and with that I am able to learn or be introduced to something that I perhaps would have never encountered before. 

  • Which digital tools best facilitate learning for you?

Digital tools are a big part of my learning experience. I bought an iPad 2 earlier this year and I have to say it was the best investment: the way that the iPad allows me to be able to organize schoolwork in a very convenient fashion. I am constantly looking for different application that will allow me to further my knowledge in any way. I have recently downloaded “Trapit” and I am obsessed. Trapit allow you to put different keywords of your interest and it will pull up gathered data and articles related to those keywords. The more keywords you look up the more the app itself has a better understanding of you and what you like so you will get a better end result of articles and findings. I also use Adobe Reader so I can add the resources from class on to the iPad and can do some reading when I get some spare time. But definitely the iPad is working for me because its organized and at this point I don’t see what I couldn’t possibly use it for.

  • How do you gain new knowledge when you have questions?

When it doubt I go to my trusty Google search engine. I enjoyed doing research in the time of questioning or not knowing where to go. I start off by asking Google the question itself and see what pops up or enter keywords itself and the rest just falls into place. I look at different sites for example blogs, organizations, networks, articles, and so on. I like to be able to see the different perspectives of each indiviuals and with that hopefully gain a better understanding of what I am questioning.

  •  In what ways does your personal learning network support or refute the central tenets of connectivism?

I think that the general concept of connectivism works in my favor personally. When watching the video by George Siemens he really points the benefits of its role, he said

“Our knowledge literally is distributed across other networks of human beings, technological devices, and other ends. That’s where connectivism starts to come into play. So that’s the application of the technology to aid and to extend that dimension as well.”

The exposure to personal learning is evident when you are able to intelligently speak of it to others and with that be able to acquire a point of view that might be new.

Neuroscience and Information Processing

For this week we need to discover resources that allows us to uncover my to recent topics that we have been discussing this week in class. There are so many resources out there but I haven’t chosen the following because of the resources that within each article. The first topic leans towards a school environment and the second is for the workplace, I wanted to cover both areas.

The Brain and Learning

During this week I have found very fascinating the idea of Right Brain Vs. Left Brain.  While reading Left Brain Vs. Right Brain Function in Learning, I was able to discover what they explained by Dr. Michael Corballis as:

“To say that the two hemispheres have somewhat different functions is not a myth. But it is wrong to say that one or the other side is universally dominant. Dominance is task-related, not person-related. If we’re talking or reading, the left brain is dominant, but if we are navigating the right brain is dominant. I think there is a strong desire to categorize people into two groups (good/bad, strong/weak, fat/thin); it’s a kind of easy simplification.”

I agree with what he says in regards to wanting to categorize as we do with everything else because it might be easier to understand. Continue reading and there are other links to help you with discover what type of learner you are with Left Brain Vs. Right Brain Teaching Techniques. As instructors it gives us different technique to be able to adapt to all of our students that might be of different learning technique.

The golden item in all of this is the Brain Lateralization Theory (discovered in the link above) and how it goes in to depth to topics such as:

  1. What is the theory of “brain lateralization?”
  2. The two halves (“hemispheres”) are joined by the corpus collosum.
  3. We can specify the functions of the two hemispheres.
  4. Ideally, we develop “lateralization.”
  5. We tend to use one half more than the other.
  6. We tend to distrust or even dislike the non-dominant half.
  7. We need to develop both hemispheres.

It really breaks down the use of both halves of our brain, and even the lack of.

 

Problem-solving Methods During the Learning Process

“The Simplex Process A Robust Creative Problem-Solving Process.”

This process consists of step-by-step actions that help you identify and solve problems in the workplace. Each step identifies how to be innovation when finding a solution, and like you commonly see on your shampoo bottle for better results you can rinse and repeat (you can skip the rinse and just repeat to solve other problems):

  1. Problem Finding
  2. Fact-Finding
  3. Problem Definition
  4. Idea Finding
  5. Selection and Evaluation
  6. Planning
  7. Sell Idea
  8. Action

This is a shorter explanation because once you visit the site it is pretty self-explanatory making it a great tool to you for the workplace and with some tweaks other areas as needed.

Week 1 Assignment 1 (sounds like an uncover mission)

It is interesting to see all types of blogs out there about instructional design. I think that this assignment took me a bit longer than I thought because of all the time spent looking back and forth at blogs. There are so many resources on the field of instructional design and this being my first blog ever, it has really opened my eyes to wanting to get to know what I can now learn from those not only in my class but also outside of it. One thing that all these blogs have in common is the emphasis is always taking your learning to the next level. I have included three blogs that I was able to learn most about.

First Blog: Do You Need An Instructional Design Degree?

I found this blog to be very interesting because I feel that we are all on this boat. We all recently made a choice to whether or not pursue our degree/certificates with Walden in Instructional Design. I am very green to this industry but I have always felt that in order to become more “marketable” in any industry a degree is the best way to back up any experience. I recently applied for a job but because I didn’t have the degree I was automatically disregarded, and the person who did get hired had the degree but no experience in the field. The author gives valid points to having and not having a degree. I feel that this blog is helpful because it is very easy to get flustered while getting our degrees but we have to know that it is worth it at the end.

Second Blog: What does an instructional designer do?

Christy Tucker (2007) states in her blog, “IDs know how people learn and have ideas on how to help them learn better.” This blog is a series of blogs that goes into depth of the different roles that an instructional designer can go into, what skills are necessary, and the career paths. I think that this is beneficial for all of us as we continue to make our way through the M.S. IDT we know what options are out there for us.

Third Blog: 30 Top Online Resources For Instructional Designers To Keep Up With

This blog shares the evolution of a role that an instructional designer in part of. In this blog I was able to discover even more blogs that have authors from the UK, one in particular called Information is Beautiful. This blog allows you to take a look into areas that someone like myself who is so new to this industry would never be aware of. After looking into Information is Beautiful more in depth I was able to see some visual learning PDF files and found them quite interesting. As I stated before in our discussion I am all about the visuals so this is something that I plan to incorporate when I can into my role as an instructional design.

What my three blogs have in common is my green mind to this industry in its early states really learning what this role really can be. There is now a overflow of information and introduction of possibilities of what I can do. I have always been very eager but now seeing that the blog world is something extraordinary in this industry.
